The cron-package has little to do with it. It is in the new GNOME
Schedule release that now got support for X applications. Technically
emulating support for X in crontab. I don't think there is a bug for it
yet so feel free to open it, but have a search for open gnome-schedule
bugs first.

Totem is an X application, search for executing X application with
crontab. The newest release have support for this. Bit it is not yet
packed for Ubuntu.

i think the issue is resolved...but no idea what was wrong with the previous
command 'totem --play a.mp3' which could be executed from the terminal but not
executed as a cron job ...any suggestions?
