The cron-package has little to do with it. It is in the new GNOME Schedule release that now got support for X applications. Technically emulating support for X in crontab. I don't think there is a bug for it yet so feel free to open it, but have a search for open gnome-schedule bugs first. You

i used another command: 'mpg123 a.mp3' and now it is being executed at the appropriate time. i think the issue is resolved...but no idea what was wrong with the previous command 'totem --play a.mp3' which could be executed from the terminal but not executed as a cron job ...any suggestions? --
