Public bug reported:

My machine is amd64.
I took the current linux-rt-2.6.31 source, applied a patch, changed the
changelog and tried to build a new kernel package.
amd64 package was created successfully - but i386 not. I uploaded the source
package to launchpad and got the same result there.

Here the log:
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/30664328/buildlog_ubuntu-karmic-i386.linux-rt_2.6.31-2.2~sl1_FAILEDTOBUILD.txt.gz

It complains about:

II: Checking ABI for rt...
EE: Previous or current ABI file missing!
    /build/buildd/linux-rt-2.6.31/debian/abi/2.6.31-2.2/i386/rt
make: *** [abi-check-rt] Error 1

What I wonder is - why does it need the abi in the first place (AFAIK it
should be generated) and why it does not try to use the 2.6.31-1.1 abi!?

** Affects: linux-rt (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
