I tried a backport of the Karmic kernel to Jaunty with the patch listed

This sounds like a match to bug #419264. The symptoms are slightly
different however the workaround (killing compiz) and the timing of your
last update suggest it's probably the same bug. There is a kernel with

I have exactly the same problem.
Sometimes I get the bug 237339, sometimes this one
and sometimes the laptop resumes correctly (not often).
So it might be that the two bugs are related.
Note that I attached the requested files to the bug 237339.
