/usr/LOCAL/bin/rkward? My first guess is that you have an out-of-date
manual installation left on that machine, and it's simply earlier in the
path than the karmic package. Could you check that / move the old
installation out of the way?

I added the CRAN repository by appending the following line:
deb http://lib.stat.cmu.edu/R/CRAN/bin/linux/ubuntu jaunty/
to /etc/apt/sources.list
After "sudo aptitude update" and "sudo aptitude safe-upgrade" a new,
working copy of rkward was installed.
Problem solved.

RKWard in the official intrepid and jaunty archives is riddled with
bugs, unfortunately. I don't know, whether it is possible to get a
backport of the more recent releases into intrepid/jaunty archives, or
who would be able to do so.
