When using the 32 bit version of the Java virtual machine on a 64 bit system, then eclipse won't start. The solution is to change the default Java virtual machine to java-6-openjdk or sun-java6 by running 'sudo update-alternatives --config java'. Thanks Mauro for the solution. Therefore I close
