You can ask for backport in ibex or you can simply use the version from
jaunty. I don't have much knowledge of the code otherwise I would have
tried preparing an update to the version in intrepid.

Well this is a first. Tried out the next version (8.08-1) and it seems
to work fine. So this issue is fixed pretty close upstream. It makes
the package pretty useless in ibex though, even if it works in its
jaunty version.
