Some further comments, because of the reported problems about Maxima and
wxMaxima:

It is no problem to compile and build Maxima or wxMaxima on Ubuntu 9.10 and the
earlier version with serveal Lisp compilers. I am sure that even Maxima 5.17.1
has no problems. I think it is a problem of the
