Yes, this was the problem and the solution. I copied the errmsg.sys from
the mysql installation (the one I compiled from source for this
platform) into the slimserver/MySql directory and it solved the
problem. Thanks!

I've had good luck with ntpdate;
ipkg install ntpdate

I got it. You pointed me in the right direction. I was adding the
command as its own line when I was supposed to add it to the kernel
line -- I told you I was new to Linux.
Any idea how to make that change to the kernel permanent? If not, I
should have it figured out after I get some sleep.

I don't think I installed anything more than lame and w32codecs after
installing the base system. Using the *.tar.gz worked fine on my
fileserver. Then again, it was about 80 days ago when I did all that. I
suppose emerging it would be nice. Then it would be installed as a
regular service.

Thanks for your prompt response, Matthew. I eventually figured this out
myself by reading various Kuro/Gentoo Wikis and came to almost the same
solution.
I got stuck on dev-libs/syck -- for some reason adding this to

Thanks for the response. I did some research and found that suggestion
on a couple of web pages. However, if I add the command in Grub before
the boot command I get something like "command not recognized" and if I
add it after the boot command nothing changes.

I am a brand new (as of yesterday) Linux user -- well actually this is

I asked the same question on the Ubuntu site and didn't

Excellent thanks for the advice. A friend of mine has recommended Ubuntu
too. I think I'm just going to have to pick one out of the hat. :P

There are at least as many users running Fedora as Debian. Both will
work fine.
A fairly minimal install should be fine as long as you have perl.

If you want a bare-bones OS to go along with your bare-bones hardware,
try ClarkConnect. It was designed to be a lightweight and simple

Hi Guys,
I've got experience of setting up Fedora and CentOS but I see Debian
seems to be the fav flavor for SlimServer.
I've just bought a really basic barebone Asus to act as a "server" for
my Squeezebox with really basic cheap components. It was about £160 in
AMD 3000+, 512 MB RAM & DVD Rom.
