I managed to solve it, as posted, but to answer your questions:
1. after installing (several times), I checked what users and groups
were available, and could only find the group "slimserver" with no
associated user (trying to create the user at this point is too late,

SE Linux under Fedora can cause problems with Slimserver. I use a PC
that is 100% dedicated as a Slimserver music box so I simply turned SE
Linux off. You may also need to fiddle with Fedora's firewall settings.

Are you sure that the RPM install is failing to create the slimserver
user? That would be quite strange. Take a look at /etc/passwd to see
if it's there. In any event, it sounds like you're trying to run
slimserver as the root user, not the slimserver user. You need to
start it with the init s
nm,
if anyone else is having the same problem:
1. don't use yum to install it
2. make sure there is no users slimserver", or group slimserver
3. create both a new user "slimserver", (with the "create personal
group" checked, make its home dir /usr/local/slimserver

Hi,
I'm trying to setup slimserver on my new installation of fedora zod
(I'm new to linux administration).
I downloaded the current version of slimserver, using the package
manager to install it.
Slimserver installs fine, and claims to start, but just falls over
immediately.
It looks like it's
Thank you! I'll try that.

I'm totally new to Linux/Ubuntu and I have just installed Slimserver.
It's working just fine, but I have my music folder on a second hdd
(/media/sdb) and every time I start the os I have to manually mount
that drive.
Is there a way to automatically have it mounted when the computer is
started? The

I used apt-get, so I guess that meant I used the Debian package. I'll
uninstall that and

SlimDevices have their own debian repository - search the forums, I don't
know its address...

I've recently set up a new Ubuntu server with slimserver (from apt-get)
on it. It's seems to be working but I'm missing my old familiar
squeezebox font (which I have on my FSG and Windows version of
slimserver).
Perhaps there are some font files (e.g. xxx.font.bmp) that I can just
copy-paste, but
