Watching disk and network usage, I think the squeezecenter tries at or
near each beginning of song to send a burst of data to fill the
player's buffer, and then goes after it more lightly, just for refills.

Perhaps your wifi configuration/hardware is flawed/incompatible and

Squeezecenter typically runs as a "service" under Linux and is not
started with a menu selection.
In a terminal box, type the following at the $ or # prompt:
/sbin/service squeezecenter status
If Squeezecenter is running you get something that looks like this:

Tried 7.2.1 on Ubuntu Server 8.04.1 last night and apparmor error still
present with the following server.log error:
