I was able to complete the installation and my Duet controller sees it,
although so far its not connecting. Also, when I login using the web
interface, I'm not seeing any of my shares.

Thanks, I found and installed those packages, and the make commmand went
a lot further this time, but now I'm getting a different error: (I'm
just showing the last command executed and the error returned...it
executes a whole bunch before this)

I just finished installing Ubuntu 8.10 for a purpose built XBMC HTPC.
The installation is minimal, designed to boot straight up to XBMC,
which is does. FWIW, I used this tutorial here:

SC runs as a different user than you, and can't write things restricted
to your user id.
If you don't have concerns with protecting yourself from other users of
your linux machine, the easiest thing is to set the playlist directory
read/write for everyone.

You need to install the development versions of libmad, flac, ogg and
vorbis. This error message indicates that it can't find the header
files, which are included in the dev packages.
