I think I've found the issue, if not the solution. I noticed that the
problem is common to files which have accented characters.
So the files from artists like "Sérgio Mendes", "Röyksopp" and others
won't play (although they used to!).
I had a dig around the SC settings, but couldn't find a
lib/portaudio is version 0.18.1 which does not have alsa support.
lib/libportaudio is version 0.19 which does. I still use 0.18.1 for
win32, solaris and any oss binaries I release as the older library does
not exhibit the drop out problems we've seen in the past with the alsa
