I am running ubuntu 9.10 and squeezbox server Version: 7.4.2 and m4a's
are still not working for me...
I just created a custom-covert.conf file in etc/squeezeboxserver/ which
looks like this:

I've got it... I didn't realize that the title information is not taken
from the mp3 filename but from the mp3-tags, and these had wrong
encoding due to my ripping program (audex). I corrected this with
EasyTAG, now everything is running fine.

I patched/compiled squeezeslave like you said; just when I was thinking
to reply that everything was going well (3+ hours playing without
problem), squeezeslave hanged a few times like before.

to get this to work so far I've done this:
into terminal then:
sudo fdisk-l
this returned the drive info I needed, my usb drive being "sdc1", then
I needed to find the uid details for the user "squeezeboxserver" which
is the default user id for the program, to do this do the following:
id sque

Well I went for the startup script option to avoid overwrites when
EasyPeasy or Squeezecenter is upgraded.
