i have not been able to find instructions for installing
squeezeboxserver on linux using the tar file. is there anything
available?
i downloaded the 7.5.3 tar file.

Well, regrettably...
I upgraded (*zypper dup*) to *openSUSE 11.4 RC2* yesterday. Almost
everything works, but SBS does not:

I'm running Ubuntu Server 8.04 with SBS 7.5.3
If SBS gets restarted for any reason, (including reboot of Ubuntu), SBS
stops working until I've done an uninstall/install of SBS. This is
obviously a slight inconvenience!
