What the script does
The attached zip file has an install script for cloning the lms git code
and creating a sysv/upstart/systemd service. Tested on Ubuntu
14.04.1LTS & Fedora 21. See the README file in the zip for details.

has more traffic, found the answer there. Or at least the "good enough"
answer... downloaded the 7.8 beta version and it worked fine. Go figure.

I just tried it out with strange results... It turns out that I get a
slight hiss on the left speaker, but no hiss at all on the right
speaker. I'm not sure why, but it might have something to do with the
power supply or cables. I'll see if I can figure it out when I have a
bit more

I use the same setup and mount my network share using nfs.
