Michael, not a big deal, but I still don't get notifications in the Web
GUI when a new plugin update is available. I believe it's particular to
the Web GUI as the Material Skin App displays the notification.

Take a look at hifiberryOS, and how it starts up the card. There must
be a mixer setting somewhere. Are you sure about that overlay setting?
