Ok so set up a clean install of jaunty on an old laptop to do some
dicking around and now have the no available video device that several
are experiencing rather than the unable to open console terminal.
Again running as root with sudo gets around it here for the moment.

mwaha - nah I'm the one who's ancient not the OS so my line of
progression took me up through BSD to Solaris as it's 'feel' is more in
line with what I grew up with (wrote my first code in Cobol in 1973 !)

rying to open a console terminal here. This is
my sons laptop (I'm ancient so run BSD and Solaris on my own
machinesdon't laugh it's better than the CPM I used to run) so
could have heaven knows what mods.
Curiosity has got the better of me now - can you point me to
ner party so I spent just enough time on it to
get it going (whilst also preparing the food !)...more as I find
it.
