Not entirely the same set up - but I had the same problem and tried all
the suggestions in the forum to no avail - so did an upgrade to 8.04
and it all worked.

In case anyone else goes down this route ...
In the end i took the drastic measure of upgrading my server from 6.06
LTS to 8.04 LTS - which luckily seems to have solved the issue. Just
got to fix the AppArmor issue now - but there's lots of help on that
one :-)

Also i use the windows version of MYSQL Control Centre to remotely
manage mysql. I tried accessing via serveraddr:9092 but couldn't
connect
Can some one explain how i can achieve either or both of the above
