At a very simplistic level, alsa is at the kernel level and handles the
low level communication to the hardware. Pulse audio sits above alsa,
and can handle input from multiple sources.

I have an experimental debian x86_64 build of squeezelite that uses
pulseaudio hostapi with the portaudio library. We should be able to
build it for raspbian armhf too.
