Okay upon digging deeper into my last post errors regarding XML-Parser,
it looked like it was having compilation errors for Expat. Then, by
reading the first text output by the build script, I see that I must
have libexpat1-dev installed... so a quick
apt-get install libexpat1-dev
and then anot
My sources.lists looks like...

I used to be able to just extract the .tar.gz and then run the
slimserver.pl file like any executable. I haven't tried that with 6.5+
but it used to work fine with earlier versions.
