davephillips, The new wiki page that peterw created explains what you need to do quite well. Since you are running Ubuntu however, I suggest you edit your /etc/fstab file with gedit, which should already be installed: sudo gedit /etc/fstab Vi would be a nasty introduction to Linux or Unix:) -Ro

davephillips, I think you want to change how Ubuntu is mounting the drive - I assume you are going to leave the drive attached permanently? If so, then you want to edit your fstab file. The problem is that Ubuntu is mounting the files with a umask of 077, and so the files are not visible by the

I would guess that mounting the usb drive to a directory within your login will do the job. If you create the directory in your desktop then mount the usb to that directory i think that will have the permissions OK. If not then chmod command will do the job on the usb directory.such as sudo chm
