Thanks for the tips, I managed to hack it into working.
Now I discovered it's a major PIA to get Samba to share an external
FAT32 drive. I think I'll just dig out a copy of Windows and save the
rest of my weekend from this p*ssing around!

Yes, the desktop and folders expose the drive and the files are
accessible. It is FAT32. It was connected and powered up before booting
the system. Browsing /media does not expose the drive.

Can you see the files from the GUI file browser? Do you know if the
external drive is FAT32 or NTFS?
You should be able to browse to /media and find the drive if it's
mounted correctly.
I will warn you that if the drive is not plugged in when you boot up
squeezecenter may have problems finding
