At first, it worked, but after a while I got the dreaded the "there is
already another copy" message, along with database connectivity
problems. I applied the Perl package noted on the Wiki, and at least
for now, all seems in order.

The Slim Devices download page describes a known issue with Ubuntu
8.10, and looks to be exactly the problem you're having.
