I just realized that I can simply use the already present samba share.
If I mount it using samba, I can select squeezeboxserver as user for
that mount. And it seems to be working.
Is using Samba a bad idea? I think I need this anyway to access the NAS
share on Windows.

I use a Linux server with files on Qnap via NFS successfully and have
done for years.
By default the NFS mount is root.root
I cant look now but if I recall correctly the user that runs LMS on the
Linux box is indeed squeezeboxserver but critically it is in the root
group and this is what gives
Ubuntu is up and running, LMS is up and running - but without a music
library. I managed to mount the NAS' "Multimedia" folder, but I cannot
access most subfolders in midnight commander, unless I start it with
sudo. I'm able to access these folders with my username using Windows,

As I didn't want to wait any longer for the NUC11 to become available
(again) and also didn't want to pay these ridiculously high prices for
the NUC10, I finally got my hands on a fairly priced and reasonably
recent NUC i3 (8th Gen) with 8GB of RAM. The plan is to run the latest
Ubuntu LTS (20.4)
Don't know Clear Linux ... Ubuntu works really well for LMS, and don't
forget that the PiCore player is based on tiny-core linux, and is very
solid as well..I am unfamiliar with how linux plays in a NUC
environment, but it should be fine ...

I would have mentionedCentOS, too, but it is officially declared as
being discontinued. There will be a fork that continues the work of
CentOS but I don't want a beginner to go this unforeseeable way.
