thanks for recommending Keystore Explorer.
I can open my keystore file w/o problem.
Maybe my problems have to do with the fact that i have setup my mac in April
this year from scratch?
Is it possible that there are some certificates or keys missing?

Matthias, I also have a keystore I created in 2011 and it still valid even with
all the Android SDK updates. I use it daily.

See if you can open it with Keystore Explorer. It's a great GUI way to deal
with the keystore. It runs in the java machine so it is platform independent.
