IMAP "marks for deletion" and waits for you to tell it to do so. Pop
moves the mail to the Deleted folder and waits for you to empty the
trash (something I have it do every time I quit).

You can set POP to wipe the client clean after downloading or keep it
on the client, no? Look at your preferences.

I got a rude awakening when I looked at my gMail account vie Safari:
there were all
the e-mails I thought were gone, having deleted them from Thunderbird.
