I didn't mean that kind of label. I meant static text/a locked field. I
said label because that is what the UI item is called on the tool bar.

Ok, mystery solved. It was because I did not have the sharedText property
checked. The field was there, but was just blank.

Yes, I did add it to the group in group edit mode.
I did not have behave as background checked, but the slider appeared on all
cards wit

Click the checkbox "Behave like a background" (This is an old HyperCard
behavior that Rev extended to groups).
