I didn't import the wav sound properly. Now I have, it works in Mac and
Windows.
BTW, I can't see any way of checking what audio files have been imported
into a stack. Where do I look?

(You can also delete the perhaps many improperly imported files there...
as you can tell, I've had to do this myself!)

I've changed the script to 'play audioclip applause.wav' and
imported the sound as a control. However, it now doesn't work on Mac.

using: play Applause.wav I have no problems with doing it this way
on Mac OS X or Win XP.
