make sure you have enough permissions on /tmp/hadoop-bmacek/
also check you have enough space to write to disk

Hello
I have a very basic question - There are various flavors of hadoop by Apache,
Cloudera, MapR, HortonWorks(may be more I am not aware of).
I would like to learn what are the differences between these distributions and
how do I know which distribution is best for me?

- when adding slaves are you adding slaves in conf/slaves file? (I assume yes)
- are these slaves mapped in your /etc/hosts file?
- in your slaves con/masters do you have entry for master host?
- in your slaves /etc/hosts does master resolves to the correct IP?
