I did some poking around. Looks like configure compiles a small c program (crammd5_installed.c) and runs it to test whether sasl2 with cram-md5 support is available. The solution is to export SASL_PATH and add the location of the compiled libraries to LD_LIBRARY_PATH: ../configure CC=gcc-4.8
