trying to use the file component and the moveFailed option to create a
directory with a timestamp and put the file there but the date string is not
parsed correctly.
This is the yaml string
file://mifir/input/import?noop=false&recursive=true&moveFailed=error/${date:now:MMdd}/${file:name

I there an option to get a more qualified error message (e.g. what's wrong in
the JSON document)?

What version of Camel do you use?
The exception has some details, but I guess the default toString does
not output any of that

Also try with newer Camel version.
I would assume the date:now function is in 2.25.x also.

You can do an onException(JsonValidationException) and then output
some more details from that exception.
But yeah out of the box, then it should likely report some more
details, you can create a JIRA.
