so to troubleshoot this further I have created completely fresh install of
CloudPlatform 4.3.0.1 with a fresh vSphere 5.5 environment using distributed
switching - no modifications to any network service offerings, no modifications
to anything for that matter.

Thanks, I didn't realise that the Resize option does allow one to change the
disk offering and not simply the size of the volume. However, this option
doesn't work for the root volumes. I guess db hacking is needed here.
