This seems to be a problem that's been raised but I see no solution: when I open a file in LO saved as .docx, the "keep as next paragraph" is always checked, resulting in big gaps at bottom of page. I fix this setting, save it. All looks good until I reopen the document and the problem is there

Thank you Brian. That was it. Gordon, I have used LyX and LaTeX and it is deceptively easy in those systems. The command for stepping is included in various Beamer templates. My problem is I have a hard drive full of documents in various formats because I keep switching between LO and LyX and
