As far as I can tell Libreoffice is available from TDF at this link.

The charge is only if you acquire it through the MAC App store. I
believe all you forego getting it directly from TDF is automated updates
via the App store.

they suggested I contact you so that I don’t have to pay the $8.99 fee to get
the latest updates.
