the video playback.
If I replace the video by a photo, all the effects I am trying to apply
work ( fade in from slide background, fade out to slide background etc.) as
I would expect.

First if it can't or won't apply fade-in fade-out etc. why are they offered?
When I select the video object ONLY the operations which I CAN perform on it
should be offered.
Second they SHOULD be useable because, whatever the internals of the system
may be,

I have exactly the same problem. So far as I can tell, NONE of the effects
options have any effect at all whatsoever.
If any one can prove me wrong just post a short impress presentation, 3
slides will do, with a short video on the 2nd one.
