It seems like I solved my own problem, with the help of others.
I accomplished typing furigana over kanji by selecting the kanji, format >
asian phonetic guide and typing the characters.
The most recent time I tried, the furigana characters in the ruby text box
don't update as you type. To get rid
Change the font used for ruby text, which is a character style called
"rubies"
The end result works, but the preview for typing in the furigana doesn't.
In addition, you have to manually type in all the furigana.
I can't figure out a way to have the ruby text display...
