I will try to at least make it configurable before the next release if
there is no strong complaint (instead of having it be stuck in limbo)

I just upgraded to 2.4.9 from 2.2.26, finally, and I am very
dissapointed with this. 2.2.26 behaves finel. It is a 2.4 regression
that it is hitting
