If you want something that works 'out of the box' with less headache,
please go for a serial modem. Ensure you check the mail archive to see
the serial modem that most Kannel users recommend.

If you have several modems, if you disconnect one and reinsert... it
will not necesarili get the same id as before sou you might have
routing problems... there is a workarround.. but too complicated.

my experience with USB modems was not really a happy party till now.
USB stacks on linux OS changed a lot in years/distributions so it's
was sometimes bad to manage. Same modem's manufacturer changed the
internal modules so same models bought in different timeframes had
different configu
