vbetool at 100% after un-suspend from RAM

When I suspend to ram and power back on "vbetool" is running at 100% on one CPU of 3 and it continues running indefinitely. Killing it destroys the display. This is not a laptop but an ATI based motherboard. Subsequent logout or suspend cause a reboot. I am running with kernel param "nomodeset"
