d not correctly set the new kernel in grub, so I was booting kernel-3.3.7-1.fc16 instead of kernel-3.3.7-1.fc17. I just did a "yum remove kernel-3.3.7-1.fc17" followed by "yum install kernel-3.3.7-1.fc17" and everything including shutdown, started working again -- Gianluca

wrong kernel (not sure what would happen in that case, the best being it would do a regular, full boot) IIRC you can force GRUB to stop at the menu by keeping pressed a key, usually "shift" is good enough. Of course then you need to know what you're doing... --
