It has been a long time since I set this up and I am running an older version
of the server but I did find this in my notes:
Before assigning a number to a new entry the DNA plugin searches the directory
to ensure that the number is not already being used. For this reason indexes
had to be

my script does the exact inverse of the procedure.
I didn't see any error while reinstalling, setup-ds-admin.pl says that all is
right...

a 389 DS installation.
I presume your "existing scripts" attempt to recreate your DIT. Do they
produce any error messages?
