I solved my problem by adding RAM -

there was 512MB, and I added 1GB.
After this, to my surprise, hibernation worked again.
So it seems the cause was a shortage of memory.
I'm rather surprised, as I have (and had) 2GB swap space.

Yes, I am running kernel-2.6.33.8-149.fc13.i686 .
But I probably did not express myself properly;
I also tried the previous 2 kernels,
and had the same hibernation problem with both,
from which I deduce that the problem has nothing to do with the kernel.
