I did some more experiments on my system, and it appears to
be gdm that is screwed up. When I switch to kdm, all my
problems with X session weirdness go away.
With gdm, I saw two completely separate X sessions
running in a 'ps'. One as user 42 (gdm) was running on vt1
and the other as my login

I try and login (gdm->gnome w/o wayland) and every once in a while I just
