Many thanks. I did read yesterday that this problem was supposedly fixed in java ver 9 on linux, so I'm downloading jre10 now. I don't know if the java runtime libraries are hardcoded into Scilab, or whether Scilab makes use of system libraries. But I'll experiment and report back, and I'll also
