FWIW I wrote a command line utility named Gum a year ago that fulfills this
purpose (invoke Maven from anywhere within the project structure), as well
as invoking the build using the Maven wrapper (when it exists).

By this time, you are probably not able to fix security holes. All common
libraries out there are are already Java 8.
Just calculate how much a total loss will cost due to security holes or
data loss, vs the cost of upgrading. That should work. 😉
