pretty sure that the only thing I did was adding the 1.0.9 RC1
libraries, and when that did not work reversed back to 1.0.8 to ensure
it wasn't my application breaking. To be sure I'm going to check again.

You are mixing classes from two different versions of MyFaces.
PORTLET_REQUEST_FLAG was added a few weeks after portlet support was
initially added to MyFaces.
You are using the newer version of PortletUtil.class with an old version
of MyFacesGenericPortlet.class.
