Many thanks for that. Thomas and John' suggestion of nb-git-branch-in-statusbar looks like it's even better than I was asking for.   However, where/how can I load it? It's not in the list of plugins NB shows me, even if I include the 8.2 portal (!), and the link on Chris' github page doesn't work
