I am currently trying to write a server in PHP that will work beside
mapserver. So mapserver serves
Just to clarify the "Or I have to do something other then create the
directory, put the files in it and go?" the statements I made earlier.
I used the geoserver gui to create a namespace, datastore and feature
types. All the created feature maps were available in MapPreview and all
worked fine.

Hi Steve,
namespace prefixes (please note the *prefix*, not the namespace itself) can
be anything, that's perfectly valid and up to the implementation.
I think any implementation that assumes a fixed namespace prefix is bound to
fail somewhere
