Bart and Christopher, Thank you for your replies. I think it is probably working as expected. I need to find and read the spec and hopefully it will make some sense or at least some more sense. I am currently trying to write a server in PHP that will work beside mapserver. So mapserver serves

Just to clarify the "Or I have to do something other then create the directory, put the files in it and go?" the statements I made earlier. I used the geoserver gui to create a namespace, datastore and feature types. All the created feature maps were available in MapPreview and all worked fine.
