It was some anti XSS mechanism all along. Why couldn't the damn thing
have generated an exception or error message or something, rather than
silently just doing nothing?

I've tried looking at it with Firebug and it looks like
Layers.loadUrl, in any way, shape or form I can
find an example or documentation for gives me nothing. Not even error
messages, just empty response objects.
