all version of openlayers have this problem ,the element span... also
interrupt the OpenLayers.Handler.Box , Ext.window also interrupt the
OpenLayers.Handler.Box
I still haven't found a way to make this work, does anyone have any
suggestions? or is this a bug of openlayers? Thank you!

Hi,
check the SelectFeature Control [1] for an example on how to use the Box
Handler.
Basically you create the handler with a callback function (done), the
callback function will get the bounds of the box drawn.
